The Interim Management Committee Chairman (IMC) of Asante Kotoko, Nana Apinkra, has admitted that both Kotoko and Hearts Of Oak mostly face threats and intimidation whenever they travel to play away matches.
This comes following the death of Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong also known as Pooley who was stabbed to death during the Porcupines’ clash with Nsoatreman in Nsoatre on matchday 19 of the Ghana Premier League.
This incident has led Kotoko and Hearts to boycott the league until their demands are met by the GFA and they are demanding an autonomous league.
Both clubs have sent a proposal to the Ghana Football Association to enhance safety and security around matchdays.
In a meeting with the Sports Minister on February 13, Nana Apinkra disclosed the frequent intimidation Kotoko and Hearts face when they travel from home.
“What happened is not the first time it always happens. We had an incident at Aduana and Berekum, at Berekum we called the military to escort us but they rejected them when we got there, saying we didn’t inform them about the military in the pre-match interview” He explained.
“Our rival Hearts Of Oak visited Basake Holy Stars and faced threats. Whenever Kotoko and Hearts play away games we face threats and intimidation.
“So this is not the first time, but this time a fan has died and is serious. But when they come to Accra and Kumasi we don’t threaten them because we are under National security.|”
Nana Apinkra pleaded with the Sports Minister to investigate thoroughly their match against Nsoatreman.
“So we plead with you to institute a probe into the match, the pre-match and post-match,” he added.
The statement comes amid ongoing discussions on improving security at league venues, a key demand from both Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.
