What kind of nation are we building when indiscipline among young people is on the rise, and respect for authority is steadily declining in our society? Why are social vices and moral decay becoming increasingly prevalent among Ghanaian youth? How do we expect to build a prosperous nation when wrongdoing is often tolerated, and a culture of misconduct is gradually becoming the norm?
Most importantly, what are we doing to reverse this troubling trend? Are we merely imparting academic knowledge in our schools, or are we also making intentional efforts to instil the values that will shape the character of the next generation?
As Ghana grapples with these pressing social issues, it has become undeniably clear that there is an urgent need for a nationwide character education campaign. While commendable efforts are being made to improve educational infrastructure, skills, technology and access to education, one essential pillar continues to be overlooked, the moral and character development of our learners.
In response to these growing national concerns, the Kofi A. Tawiah Foundation is leading a timely and transformative intervention through its Character Education initiative in schools across the country.

The State of Character Education in Ghana:
Now, more than ever, Ghana urgently needs an educational approach that not only equips students with knowledge and skills but also instils essential values in the learners. The importance of character education cannot be overstated, as it plays a critical role in shaping the next generation of leaders, innovators and citizens. Character education is an essential component of a well-rounded education, focusing on the development of essential values such as integrity, responsibility, punctuality, compassion, discipline, and respect.
These traits are vital for personal growth, social harmony and national development. Unfortunately, many schools in Ghana struggle to integrate character education into their educational experience, often prioritising academic achievement over character development. This disconnect has contributed to the growing indiscipline and value crises we observe today.
Teaching the values Ghana need:
The Kofi A. Tawiah Foundation’s Character Education Programme aims to improve this worrying trend by helping schools build a culture of character development. The Foundation firmly believes that Ghana and Africa’s problems can be solved by inspired, ethical and enlightened young and future generations of Ghanaians or Africans. Through partnerships with inspired schools, the Foundation is equipping educators with the knowledge, strategies and resources to teach and model essential values such as respect, responsibility, gratitude, punctuality, courage, and honesty in the learners. A unique feature of the programme is its practicality. Learners are not only taught about the values, they are encouraged and guided to apply them in daily life, both inside and outside the classroom or school environment.
Upcoming Training for Northern Ghana Schools:
As part of its ongoing commitment to character education, the Foundation is set to host the 2025 edition of its annual Character Education Training Programme in Accra. This flagship training programme aims to equip educators with the knowledge, skills, resources and strategies needed to implement a successful character education initiative in their respective schools. This 3-day intensive training program will welcome educators and school administrators from selected schools and institutions in Northern Ghana.
The training will involve a series of insightful presentations, panel discussions, and experience sharing to explore practical strategies to integrate character education into classroom learning and school culture. These sessions will be facilitated by an experienced consultant from Strata Leadership (USA) with decades of experience in facilitating character education sessions globally.
Participants will engage in collaborative discussions, share their perspectives and actively contribute their experiences to the character education discussions. The sessions will encourage an open exchange of ideas, enhancing a learning environment where participants can harness their ideas to integrate character education seamlessly into their school curricula and culture.
Benefits of the training:
Participants of this year’s Character Education Training Programme will get a lot of lasting benefits from the training. Educators and school administrators will gain a deeper understanding of the principles of character education and its practical implementation in their respective schools. They will also acquire teaching methodologies, skills, resources and tools tailored to nurture positive character traits in students, resulting in a more holistic and impactful educational experience.
Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to network with like-minded character educators and become part of an inspired community of character education schools that support each other in their character education initiatives.
A national call to action on Character:
The need for character education is more than just a school reform. It is a national call to action to instil the values we want in our learners and young people. If we intend to build a prosperous Ghana, then we must be more intentional about the values we instil in our children. Character education is not the sole responsibility of teachers; it must be embraced by parents, community leaders, faith-based organisations, NGOs, policymakers and every well-meaning citizen.
Now is the time to act! Let us all endeavour to become ambassadors of good character.
Let us actively raise a generation grounded in honesty, discipline, punctuality and civic responsibility. Because in the end, the kind of nation we build will always reflect the character of the people within it.
