King Charles was a fan of Daddy Lumba - British envoy reveals during condolence visit

Britain’s Deputy High Commissioner to Ghana, Keith McMahon, has revealed that King Charles was an admirer of Ghanaian music legend Daddy Lumba, describing him as one of the British monarch’s favourite artists.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of the late highlife star, Mr. McMahon shared a touching personal detail that underscored the global reach of Daddy Lumba’s music.

“As many of you may know, King Charles—my King—was such a fan of Daddy Lumba,” he said. “He told me he has a playlist on his iPhone, and one of his favourites is Daddy Lumba.”

Mr. McMahon said this admiration from King Charles reflected the extraordinary influence of Daddy Lumba beyond Ghana’s borders.

“I think that shows the breadth and the reach that Daddy Lumba had across the world. He was very influential to so many people.”

The diplomat, who visited the family on behalf of Britain and what he called “the world,” described Lumba as “a cultural pop icon” whose legacy continues to resonate globally.

“It was important to come here today and say that to his family, and remind them that although he could not live longer with us, his influence lives for a long time. God bless Daddy Lumba,” he said.

Mr. McMahon’s visit adds to the long list of dignitaries and public figures who have paid tribute since the highlife icon’s passing.

Among them are former President Nana Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The revelation about King Charles’ admiration for Daddy Lumba adds a deeply personal and international dimension to the outpouring of grief and celebration of his life.

The highlife legend’s unique sound, lyrical mastery, and cultural resonance continue to inspire music lovers across generations and continents.
