The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has dispatched officers from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS) to Yamfo and other communities in the Ahafo region to conduct an investigation into the killing of a nurse in the area.

It is the duty of PIPS, a professional unit within the Ghana Police Service, to investigate allegations of officers’ misconduct and ensure accountability within the service.

This follows the killing of a 30-year-old Richard Antwi Agyei, a nurse at the Yamfo Health Centre, who was allegedly assaulted by police officers after he was reportedly arrested at one of the Indian hemp smoking and trading sites in the community.

Richard was later pronounced dead at the Yamfo Health Centre, as another resident also sustained a serious injury, currently on admission at the Sunyani Regional Hospital, after he was allegedly shot by the military during a shooting spree to disperse the agitated residents.

The incident occurred on Friday, April 4, after a group of irate youth besieged the Yamfo Police Station, where the accused officers, allegedly from Duayaw-Nkwanta, took refuge after some angry residents attempted to set the police station ablaze to express their displeasure.

Information reaching JoyNews indicates that the team from PIPS last Friday took the statements of Nana Gyamfi Kumanini, the leader of Yamfo Youth Association, identified eyewitnesses, the Station Officer, and the Medical Doctor at the Yamfo Health Centre.

The team further invited the suspects for their statements and proceeded to meet the Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP James Annor, for his statement, after they had earlier taken the official statements from the deceased’s family in Kumasi.

JoyNews has gathered that the team will proceed to engage a pathologist to conduct a post-mortem to determine the cause of death, after compiling the preliminary information.

Again, during the post-mortem procedure, a family representative will be present, and upon completion of the report, the body will be released to the family for burial and funeral rites.

Subsequently, the investigative team will integrate the post-mortem report into the evidence collected and submit it to the Attorney General’s Office for assessment and advice on relevant charges.
