The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has held high-level discussions with some of Ghana’s most distinguished statesmen and legal minds as part of its ongoing review of the 1992 Constitution.
The engagements form part of the committee’s comprehensive effort to gather expert input on potential constitutional reforms.
The CRC has consulted both living former presidents, including:
- John Dramani Mahama (2012-2016), who shared perspectives from his tenure as president and opposition leader
- John Agyekum Kufuor (2001-2008), who offered insights from his administration’s constitutional experiences
Key figures from Ghana’s legislative and judicial branches have also participated:
- Speaker Alban Bagbin, the current Speaker of Parliament and longest-serving MP in Ghana’s history
- Former Speaker Prof. Mike Oquaye, who served as Speaker from 2017-2020
- Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, who headed the judiciary from 2017-2019
The committee engaged directly with framers of the current constitution:
- Nana S.K.B. Asante, Chairman of the Committee of Experts that drafted the 1992 Constitution
- Nana Ato Dadzie, former Chief of Staff under President Rawlings and key figure in the transition to constitutional rule
Prominent scholars and practitioners have added their voices:
- Sam Okudzeto, renowned lawyer and former Council of State member
- Prof. Kwamena Ahwoi, governance expert and key architect of Ghana’s decentralization system
The CRC has indicated that additional consultations are planned with other eminent persons in coming weeks. Committee Chairman Prof. Henry Kwasi Prempeh emphasized that these engagements provide invaluable historical context and expert analysis for the review process.
“The wisdom of these distinguished citizens who have shaped our constitutional journey is crucial as we consider reforms for the future,” Prof. Prempeh stated. “Their experiences offer lessons we cannot afford to ignore.”
The committee continues to welcome input from all Ghanaians through its ongoing public engagements and written submissions at [email protected].
