Kennedy Agyapong’s No.1 spot on ballot “a sign of victory”- Kwasi Kwarteng

The campaign team of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, one of the five aspirants in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race, has described his number one position on the ballot paper as a “sign of victory.”

Speaking to journalists after the balloting exercise held at the NPP headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, on Friday, October 10, spokesperson for the Ken Agyapong campaign team, Kwasi Kwarteng, said the process was fair and transparent, adding that the outcome was a positive sign for their candidate.

“It was just five candidates. It was an open process, and the candidates had representatives who picked their own numbers,” Mr Kwarteng explained.

“In terms of the people, the marketing, and the visibility of the ballots, being number one gives us a lot of advantage.”

He said the campaign team was confident that their message of change and renewal continued to resonate strongly with delegates across the country.

“From day one, we have always maintained that our campaign is the right one,” he said.

“We are going to tell delegates the core message of the party and what Ken has always maintained, that even in the spirit of revival, we need a new face. Kennedy is bringing three things: jobs, jobs, and more jobs. That’s the most important.”

Mr Kwarteng, however, clarified that while the team was delighted with the outcome, their confidence did not depend solely on the number they picked.

“We are not fixated on any number. “But even after the balloting, number one gives us another advantage in terms of marketing, PR, and visibility on the ballot. These are legitimate factors we can acknowledge.”

When asked whether the position guaranteed victory, especially considering that Mr Agyapong also picked the number one spot in the 2024 elections but lost, Mr Kwarteng said the circumstances this time were different.

“These are two separate elections with different dynamics. This time around, we are at number one, and that should send a strong signal that we are coming up. But the most important thing is that whatever number we choose is divine.”

He added that the team’s focus now is to reach out to delegates with a clear and practical message.

“We will go to the delegates, talk to them, and we are very hopeful. Like the Bible says, the heart of the king is in the hands of the Lord. So we are confident that God will guide this process in our favour.”

The NPP’s presidential primary is scheduled for January 31, 2026, with former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Ken Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong contesting for the flagbearer slot. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is 2nd on the ballot after Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong comes third, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum comes 4th, while Kwabena Agyepong is 5th on the ballot.
