The Pro Vice-Chancellor of KAAF University, Mrs Theresa Adusei Peasah Aidoo, has called on the public to stop discriminating against and maltreating elderly widows.
Speaking at the university’s annual donation ceremony at Mankessim Nkwanta in the Central Region, Mrs Aidoo lamented that many elderly widows are subjected to cruel treatment, with some being accused of witchcraft and blamed for their husbands’ deaths.
“We must treat our widows with dignity and respect, especially the elderly ones who have contributed to our society,” Prof. Aidoo said. She decried the neglect of widows by their families, which leaves many of them to fend for themselves.
“We are committed to making a positive impact in our community,” Prof. Mrs Aidoo said, emphasising the importance of giving back.
The event formed part of KAAF University’s annual giving programme, organised in collaboration with Nana Yaa Nyarkoah II, Queenmother of Mankessim Nkwanta. The donation included food items, clothing materials, and other essential supplies for widows and orphans.
The Queenmother, Nana Yaa Nyarkoah II, praised the partnership, noting that it has strengthened their annual donation efforts. She appealed to the university and other investors to help create job opportunities for the youth in the community.
Widows who benefited from the donation expressed their gratitude to KAAF University and the Queenmother.
One widow said, “I am grateful for the support; it will help me take care of my children.” Another widow added, “The kindness has brought smiles to our faces.”
