We at JOYNEWS strongly condemn the violent attack on our reporter, Latif Iddrisu, by individuals believed to be supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) during a live broadcast on Tuesday, May 27.
The incident occurred on the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), where Mr Iddrisu was reporting on the arrest of the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako — widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
We express our deep concern over the incident, describing it as an assault not only on our reporter but also on press freedom and democracy more broadly.

“JOYNEWS strongly condemns the attack on our reporter, Latif Iddrisu, during coverage of the arrest of the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Latif was delivering a live report from the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) when he was assaulted by individuals believed to be supporters of Mr Boasiako, who had gathered to show solidarity.
He was struck on the head by some of the attackers, with others reportedly using a stone and a rubber band as weapons. This assault on a journalist in the line of duty is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”
We emphasise that journalism is a public service, and any attempt to intimidate or harm reporters amounts to a direct threat to democracy.
“Journalists serve the public interest by reporting events as they unfold. Any attempt to obstruct or intimidate them is not only an attack on press freedom but also a threat to democracy itself.”
The matter has been officially reported to the police. JOYNEWS calls for a swift and thorough investigation, followed by the prosecution of those responsible.
While we acknowledge the apology issued by the NPP, we urge the party to go further by cooperating fully with the authorities.
“We acknowledge the apology rendered by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and expect the party to fully cooperate with the police in bringing the perpetrators to justice.”
