Third place after 15 games, into the Women’s FA Cup, Jonina Ladies are enjoying an incredible run in the 2024/25 season. However, one man hasn’t been mentioned—Joseph Osei Owusu.

Osei Owusu, also known as “Time Daso”, has been the brain behind the team since the second of the 2023/24 season, helping the team beat relegation before making them title contenders.

Osei Owusu Joseph

In October 2023, Jonina Ladies, a team based in Antie Aku, made their debut in Ghana’s women’s top-flight league, the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League.

This came after they had beaten Epiphany Warriors to one of two qualification spots.

Having struggled in the early stages of their maiden season in the top flight, Jonina Ladies parted with Charles Dushie, who had brought them into the league, appointing Osei Owusu in the middle of the season.

With the team in eighth place, it was a daunting task for the young gaffer, but he never shied away from the challenge, taking it one game at a time.

By April 2024, he had worked his way out, and the team were in fourth position, but it was going to take a long time to catch up with the leaders. In five matches, Jonina Ladies had secured three wins and two draws, conceding only one, which was a testament to their strong defensive performance.

At the end of the campaign, Jonina were in fifth place, 13 points behind eventual league winners Hasaacas Ladies, the game against the latter being the only one that Osei Owusu’s side lost after taking over the club.

He had managed five wins, three draws and one defeat in nine games.

After the season, Jonina let go of some of their best players after surviving relegation in their first season in the league.

Time Da So

In the 2024/25 season, Osei Owusu continues to deliver on his promise to get the club to be one of the best in the country.

His impact as the head coach of the club has been remarkable. With his leadership and expertise, the team has shown significant improvement, displaying their potential and determination to succeed.

They currently sit third on the league table in the Southern Zone after 15 games played.

They have recorded eight wins, drawing four and losing three this season, which leaves them on 28 points, six behind league leaders Hasaacas heading into the final three games of the campaign.

Glory in Sight for Jonina and Osei Owusu

Away from league action, Jonina could be heading for their first silverware since their promotion to the top flight.

The Antie Aku-based side are in the final of the Women’s FA Cup after an incredible run. Two weeks ago, Jonina picked up a slot to play in the final of this season’s Women’s FA Cup after easing their way past lower-tier side Somanya Rootz Sistaz.

Jonina beat clubs like Epiphany Warriors, GRA Ladies, Sissamba Ladies and Sung Shining Ladies en route to make the semifinals, where they eventually found a way past Rootz Sistaz.

Having started from the Round of 64 stage, Jonina sealed a narrow win against Premier League rivals Epiphany with a 1-0 score at the Antie Aku Astro Turf.

GRA Ladies were next in line for them in the Last 32. Jonina snatched a 3-1 win on the road, making it four goals in two games in the domestic cup competition.

Jonina, on the road again, made light work of Division One League side Sissamba Ladies, claiming a 0-2 win in the last 16.

The club’s biggest win came in the quarterfinal stage when they faced Northern Zone side Sung Shining Ladies in Wa. That game saw them put five goals past their opponents to advance into the last four of the competition.

In the semifinals on Sunday, March 16, braces from Matilda Fodu and Joyce Atimbila did the magic for Jonina as they won 4-1.

They are the favourites for the cup competition as they will face Faith Ladies in the final, with the date and venue yet to be announced.

With all this to his name, Osei Owusu, indeed, has been key to the club’s successes in the last one and a half years.

A title will be the only crown his works deserve after his impressive effort, but at the moment, Osei Owusu is focused on a strong finish to the league campaign.
