President of Ghana Weightlifting Federation and Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has pushed back against provisions in the Sports Fund Bill that propose funding sports development through athletes’ bonuses.
Addressing Parliament, Mr. Shaib argued that such measures unfairly burden athletes who already struggle for limited rewards.
“Speaker, it also goes on to say that percentages from tournaments and bonuses from athletes. How? This is not a reliable way of generating funds for our athletes.”
He added that
“You cannot come and say that an athlete or a footballer should go and struggle and bring you his money or the bonus that he or she has had to come and contribute towards sports development.”
He described the proposal as unreliable, cautioning that sports policy should protect athletes rather than place additional demands on them.
