James Varrick Armaah’s Legacy: 63 gospel songs and 4 albums with Harmonious Chorale

Renowned Ghanaian music composer and choral director, James Varrick Armaah, has cemented his legacy in the gospel music space with four gospel albums and a remarkable catalogue of 63 compositions, widely performed across Ghana and beyond.

Armaah is the founder and director of Harmonious Chorale Ghana, an award-winning interdenominational choir based in Accra. The group, which has gained continental recognition, began in 2005 as the Harmonious Quartet and was reconstituted as Harmonious Chorale in 2007.

James hails from Winneba in the Central Region and attended Winneba Secondary School. He holds both an MPhil and a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of Ghana, as well as an MBA in Human Resource Management from the Methodist University College Ghana.

He has directed Harmonious Chorale throughout its 18-year existence and previously served with other notable choirs, including:

Organist, Winneba Youth Choir (2000–2007)

Organist, St John Methodist Church, Tantra Hills (4 years)

Choirmaster, St Paul Methodist Cathedral, Tema (7 years)

Director, Philharmonic Choir, ICGC Christ Temple (2004–2008)

Promoting African Choral Music

Beyond performance, Armaah is a dedicated advocate for African choral compositions. He serves as Director of Operations and Executive Secretary of the African Choral and Gospel Championship.
