Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has expressed outrage over the perceived double standards in Ghana’s justice system.
According to him, he had to pledge landed property as bail for an alleged obstruction of justice, while former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta remains at large despite multiple pending cases against him.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, December 4, following an inspection of the property he provided as surety, Mr Kpebu criticised the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng, for allowing Ofori-Atta to evade justice.
“Our Special Prosecutor allowed the most valuable suspect to flee. That story, we will keep telling until he leaves that office. A man who has five cases around his neck. How can you allow him to run away, yet look at my situation?” he said.
He explained that in his case, he had to provide landed property to secure bail after being accused of obstructing a public officer.
“For over words that I said in reply to a soldier who abused me, I had to provide landed property. Yet you allow Ofori-Atta, who has five cases hanging around his neck involving hundreds of millions of dollars, to run away. That is the problem we must keep highlighting,” he added.
Mr Kpebu emphasised that his criticism is not about denying anyone medical care or justice but about fairness in the application of the law.
