Comedian Foster Romanus believes he has played a significant role in the growth and development of the comedy industry in Ghana.

According to him, the subsector of the entertainment industry was described as non-existent until his cohort emerged and changed the narrative.

Speaking in an interview with Amelley Djosu on Joy Prime’s Celeb Biz, Foster Romanus indicated that persistent push and determination from him and his colleagues revived the comedy sector.

“I think we’ve done our best when it comes to playing a role there because, at a time, we were not part of the discussion, we were not part of anything entertainment, but then we pushed hard, we pressed on, we were determined, and now here we are,” the comedian said.

The former contestant of ‘Stars of the Future’ said that the comedy trajectory has not been all rosy.

He said many people had the perception that there were no comedians in Ghana; and Ghanaian comedians were not funny.

But today, Ghanaian comedians are travelling across the globe to perform on international stages.

This, the General Manager of EBN Network said, is a clear testament to the development of the comedy industry in Ghana.

Foster Romanus revealed that he inspired and played a key role in the growth of some new comedians, such as Lexi the Comic, O.B. Amponsah, and Jacinta Ocansy, just to mention a few.

“Now we have comedians going as far as Rwanda, Uganda, South Africa, and the UK. There’s OB, Lexi just came from the United States; Jacinta has been to the UK. I feel we inspired all these people in some way or another; directly or indirectly, they saw something good on that side and they saw that they could do it, and I think they’ve done their best,” he said.

The standup comedian said he is never perturbed about being compared to other artists in the industry. According to him, every act has its own qualities and may not be appropriate to compare.

“It’s inevitable; no matter what you do, there’s going to be that, but what they have to know is that it’s just like football; there are those who will score, those who will defend, but at the end of the day, mostly they talk about those who score without paying attention to the others, and there are those who train, so at the end of the day, you have different people.”

“In marketing, it’s called consumer behaviour. You can’t get the consumer to always like the product. Definitely, the consumer would want to change preferences; the only thing is that you, the producer, will make sure you’re producing your best so that when you get the right consumers, you can serve them,” he explained.

The comedian also disclosed that collaborations and partnerships are one of the important factors that make you grow as a brand.

He would never hesitate to walk to another person in the field or make a phone call to ask for help or to work together.

He said that he sees everyone as an equal and understands that everyone has their own unique quality, so when you need it, you can go to them and make an agreement.
