Ghana international Majeed Ashiemru expressed his excitement after scoring his first goal in European competition in Anderlecht’s victory over AZ Alkmaar.
The 25-year-old scored the second goal of the night as Anderlecht claimed a 2-0 first-leg advantage in their UEFA Europa Conference League quarterfinal tie over the Dutch side.
Prior to scoring against Alkmaar, Ashimeru had played 20 games without scoring in any of Europe’s competitions including qualifiers.
However, the breakthrough came on Thursday at home as he received a pass from Francis Amuzu before sending a curler past the goalkeeper.
“It feels really great because I have been waiting for a long time for this moment and I think it was the right one to score my first in Europe,” the midfielder said on 3 FM the morning after.
“When the ball was coming [after Francis Amuzu’s cross], I knew if I took it on the first time it might not go [as I want]. So I just took a touch and the touch was really good…[leading to the goal].
Quizzed on how important it was seeing the assist come from Amuzu, who is said to be willing to play for the Black Stars, Ashimeru added, “Amuzu is one of my best friends not only in Anderlecht but outside the pitch. So assisting me felt really good because he had been tasking me to assist him and he ended up assisting me.”
“We just hope we continue like that because he is a great guy on and off the pitch and he is one of the guys I really do care about.”
Ashimeru has netted three goals in all competitions for Anderlecht this season as they chase a spot in the semi-final of the Conference League.
Despite the 2-0 win Ashimeru wants his side to be focused ahead of the reverse fixture.
“We stay positive because we want to get to the semifinal but it’s one game at a time. In football, you never know so we just have to go with our best because AZ are a really strong team and we the ball they are so good,” he concluded.
