Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak

The Ministry of the Interior has ordered a full-scale investigation following claims that the Special Prosecutor, Mr Kissi Agyebeng, survived two assassination attempts while carrying out his mandate.

This comes after the Director of Research, Communications and Strategy at the OSP, Sammy Darko, made the claim on Newsfile on Saturday, December 6, as pressure mounts on the OSP to deliver on its mandate.

According to the Ministry, on the same show, Mr Darko also alleged that he had been handcuffed and assaulted by 17 police officers.

“The Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Mr Samuel Appiah Darko, mentioned the assassination attempt on Newsfile, [On JoyNews] a television station in Accra, on December 6, 2025. He also claimed on the same programme that he had been handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel,” the statement read.

The Ministry described the claims as highly concerning, noting that threats against officials of accountability institutions, if verified, pose a serious danger to national anti-corruption efforts, which the government has pledged to strengthen.

According to the Ministry, preliminary engagement with Mr Agyebeng indicates that the alleged assassination attempts occurred before this year.

However, officials say there is no record of any such threats filed at any police station or state security agency.

In response, the Minister for the Interior has issued two directives. First, a comprehensive investigation has been ordered into the alleged assassination attempts, emphasising that “crime does not expire”.

Secondly, a separate inquiry will probe Mr Appiah Darko’s claim that he was handcuffed and beaten by a group of police personnel.

“The Minister of Interior has further directed as follows: Since crime does not expire, the Ministry has ordered a full-scale investigation into the claim of assassination attempts. The Ministry has also ordered an investigation into the claim by Mr. Samuel Appiah Darko that he was handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel,” the statement read.

The Ministry said it will keep the public informed as soon as the investigations reach their conclusions and any subsequent actions are determined.

Reaffirming its mandate, the Ministry stressed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring that all citizens can go about their lawful activities without fear for their safety.

“The Ministry of Interior reiterates its commitment to protecting all lives and properties to ensure that all Ghanaians can conduct all their lawful affairs without any fear for their safety,” the statement concluded.
