Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union call for strong work ethics, economic participation in 2026 new year message

Morgan Ayawine, the General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Ghana, has urged workers across the country to embrace diligence, productivity, and collaboration as Ghana enters 2026. In a New Year message addressed to ICU members and Ghanaian workers in general, he stressed that active participation in national economic activities is vital for growth and development.

Focusing on the need for enhanced productivity, the ICU leader said: “As workers and contributors to nation-building, we must not rest on our oars. We are called upon to work diligently toward increased productivity at the enterprise level, which remains a prerequisite for economic growth and national development.”

He highlighted the importance of consolidating strong work ethics to support rapid economic growth, while urging employees to set aside prejudices that hinder advancement. Employers were also encouraged to create employee-friendly work environments that foster industrial peace and sustainability.

The General Secretary further called on the Government to implement practical and workable economic policies that promote business and industrial growth, particularly as unemployment continues to rise. He praised the current administration’s efforts under the reset agenda, noting that sustained policy application is crucial to improving living standards across the country.

Addressing concerns over public utilities, he specifically mentioned the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), cautioning the government against outright sale of the essential service: “Government must exercise caution and avoid outright sale of ECG, while maintaining it as one of the nation’s most vital and indispensable assets.”
