The Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER) at the University of Ghana, Prof Peter Quartey, is urging more universities to incorporate technology into their teaching methods.

Prof. Peter Quartey made this statement at the University of Ghana, where over 100 laptops were distributed to students across the campus.

This initiative is part of the ongoing ‘One Student One Laptop’ programme.

The initiative, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, aims to provide students with equal opportunities in terms of technology access.

Speaking to JoyNews during the event, Prof. Quartey indicated that this move is worth emulating to enhance and ensure that students acquire real-world relevant skills.

“We’re adapting technology quite rapidly in the country but this is setting the pace, this is accelerating the process,” he said on Thursday, November 8.

While acknowledging that technology use in the country is increasing gradually, the Professor believes more can be done.

He urged other higher learning institutions to take a cue from the university’s intervention.

“Others can also take advantage and take a cue from what we are doing and also implement same in their institutions.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo handed over the gadgets to the students at the Cedi Conference Hall.

After distribution, the VC said “it is very fulfilling to see the smiles on the faces of the students knowing that they have their own laptops and can work with these laptops at any time of the day.

This tranche makes it a total of about 500 laptops distributed since the initiative took off.

Meanwhile, Prof Amfo called for more support from the public to ensure that the programme becomes a success.

The University is also far advanced with plans to set up a laptop assembling plant.

The initiative is expected to see full operationalization within the next year.
