The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has commended the recent appointment of Mesdames Jemilat Jawulah Mahamah and Esther Gyebi Donkor to the Board of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), describing the move as a landmark moment for Ghana’s maritime sector.

In a statement signed by Executive Secretary Mr Samson Asaki Awingobit, the association hailed the appointments as a boost for professionalism, innovation, and gender inclusivity in the maritime industry.

First Woman to Chair GMA Board

Madam Jemilat Jawulah Mahamah has been named Chairperson of the GMA Board, making history as the first woman to hold the position. She currently serves as the General Secretary of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) International and is a former President of WISTA Ghana.

Widely respected for her pioneering leadership, Madam Mahamah is known for championing gender inclusivity, capacity building, and strategic reform in the maritime sector both locally and globally.

Her appointment, the Association noted, reflects “a profound endorsement of her visionary acumen and deep expertise in maritime governance.”

Veteran Port Administrator Joins Board

Also joining the GMA Board is Madam Esther Gyebi Donkor, a seasoned maritime administrator with over three decades of service at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA). She retired as General Manager in charge of Marketing and Public Relations, a role in which she excelled at stakeholder engagement and strategic port communications.

Madam Donkor is credited with helping to enhance Ghana’s port visibility and drive growth through innovative marketing strategies.

A Progressive Future for Ghana’s Maritime Industry

The Importers and Exporters Association expressed confidence that the appointments of both women will bring renewed professionalism, purpose, and innovation to the Ghana Maritime Authority.

“We look forward to continued collaboration with the Ghana Maritime Authority under their stewardship,” the statement read. “Their collective expertise and dedication promise a progressive future for Ghana’s maritime industry,” Mr. Awingobit added.

The Association wished the new Board members a successful and impactful tenure, pledging support for initiatives that advance Ghana’s maritime interests.
