IGP urges professionalism and respect for human rights as police receive new vehicles

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has urged personnel of the Ghana Police Service to uphold human rights and the rule of law as the service intensifies policing operations across the country.

Addressing officers and guests at the handing-over ceremony of 100 new police vehicles on Thursday, January 8, the IGP described the government’s continued investment in the Police Service as a clear vote of confidence in its leadership and mandate.

He stressed, however, that such support must be matched by professionalism, discipline, and restraint in the discharge of police duties.

“Visibility must go with courtesy, mobility must go with restraint, and enforcement must go with respect for human rights and the rule of law,” Mr Yohuno stated.

He emphasised that the newly commissioned vehicles should not be regarded as instruments of authority or intimidation, but rather as tools designed to enhance public service and community safety.

The IGP assured Ghanaians that the acquisition of the vehicles forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the operational capacity of the Police Service, particularly in crime prevention, response, and public order management. He reiterated the Service’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and national security.

Mr Yohuno also appealed to the public to actively support policing efforts, noting that effective security depends on strong collaboration between law enforcement agencies and citizens.

“To the citizens of Ghana, this commissioning should serve as a reassurance that your safety remains a top priority of the government. The police are being equipped to protect lives, property, and democratic values.

“We urge the public to partner with us by continuing to share information, cooperating with officers on duty, and supporting lawful police operations. Security is a shared responsibility,” he said.

The addition of the 100 vehicles is expected to enhance police visibility, improve response times, and strengthen operational efficiency nationwide, as the Ghana Police Service continues its efforts to maintain peace, law, and order across the country.
