If you attempt to bribe a police officer now, he will disgrace you; he wants a promotion - IGP Yohuno

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has said the police administration was currently prioritising professionalism and integrity.

According to him, corruption within the Ghana Police Service was being decisively tackled, with officers now prioritising professionalism, integrity and promotion earned through hard work.

He has therefore warned that any attempt to bribe a police officer would be met with disgrace, emphasising that officers were now more focused on merit-based promotion than on illicit gains.

“I can assure you that if you attempt to bribe a police officer, he will disgrace you. He wants promotion,” the IGP stated.

The IGP said this when Ghanaian gospel musician Grace Ashly presented a special song dedicated to the Ghana Police Service to him in Accra.

Mr Yohuno said the renewed commitment within the service had been driven by reforms under the current administration, noting that the era where officers were only promoted posthumously was over.

The IGP said timely promotions and improved motivation had significantly boosted morale among personnel nationwide.
Commending police officers for their dedication, the IGP praised all regional commanders and personnel for their gallant performance over the past year.

IGP Yohuno said that he had contributed to the country’s relative calm and security.

He said the current development was just the beginning, assuring them that more efforts would be made to sustain peace and safety.

The IGP said the GPS was positioning itself to become one of the best in the world, rebuilding an image that future generations of officers would uphold.

“We want our glory back,” he said, adding that the service aimed to earn the trust and respect of every Ghanaian, from the smallest village to the largest city.

Expressing appreciation to Mrs Ashly, known for her theme songs, including those for the senior national football team, the Black Stars, the IGP said that composing a song in honour of the GPS was no easy task and described the gesture as timely.

He assured the musician that the honour would not be taken lightly, describing it as a morale booster for officers across the country.

Mrs Ashly said the composition was inspired by a personal experience that deepened her appreciation of the work of the police.

She explained that one night, while alone and working on her music, she found herself in a frightening situation and reached out to the police.

“What I received was more than help. I received comfort,” she said.

Mrs Ashly said the experience made her realise that creativity and dreams thrived because others were willing to stand watch.

“The Ghana Police Service not only safeguarded my life, but they also preserved the dream, the voice and the song that Ghana had not yet heard,” she said.

Mrs Ashly commended the service for remaining steadfast in the face of evolving security challenges, highlighting recent operations including the dismantling of a human trafficking network in Ho, interception of a major narcotics consignment in Tema and the arrest of a notorious highway robbery syndicate this year.

She also referenced earlier operations such as Operation Cobra in September 2025, arrests of human trafficking suspects in Ashaiman, neutralisation of armed robbery threats in Tema, major weapons trafficking arrests in the Northern Region, as well as CID-led murder and robbery arrests between 2024 and 2025.

She further praised the service’s efforts in tackling cybercrime and financial fraud through international collaboration.

“These efforts remind us that policing is not merely a profession, but a calling that demands vigilance, sacrifice and courage,” she said.

Mrs Ashly described the song as more than music, saying it was a message of appreciation, encouragement and solidarity to officers whose sacrifices often go unseen.

She saluted the IGP for his leadership and extended appreciation to the police management board and all personnel of the GPS.
