IET-GH lauds TOR’s use of local engineers in refinery revival

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), has commended the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) for prioritising Ghanaian engineers and technologists in its ongoing rehabilitation and restoration project.

A delegation from IET-GH, led by its President, Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng visited the refinery to assess progress and reaffirm the institution’s support for TOR’s revival efforts.

During the visit, TOR’s Managing Director, Lawyer Edmond Kombat, welcomed the team and acknowledged the contributions of IET-GH members involved in the rehabilitation process.

He also reaffirmed TOR’s commitment to working with the institution to enhance staff capacity through professional development and certification programmes, initiatives that align with the government’s Reset Agenda aimed at boosting local industry and employment.

Engr. Boateng praised TOR’s leadership for its confidence in local expertise, describing the refinery’s reliance on Ghanaian professionals as a bold and progressive step toward self-sufficiency.

He encouraged the engineers and staff to remain disciplined and united, reminding them that their work forms part of the national drive for industrial revival.

Engr. Wonder Davor, IET-GH President-Elect, also applauded TOR’s management for the forward-looking approach and called for continued collaboration with local professionals to achieve world-class operational standards.

Meanwhile, Engr. Dr. Miriam Eduful, a notable advocate for women in engineering, emphasised the importance of workplace safety and consistent use of protective equipment.

As part of the engagement, Lawyer Kombat disclosed plans to introduce a TOR Training Programme to provide practical industrial training for students from KNUST, UENR, UMaT, and other technical universities.

He further announced a partnership initiative with Middle Eastern refineries to train 5,000 Ghanaian engineers across various specialisations starting next year.

The IET-GH team, guided by Ing. Abraham Quayson, toured key operational areas such as the distillation, reforming, and power generation units.

TOR’s engineers were commended for completing critical maintenance tasks that were previously outsourced to foreign contractors, a move that has saved the refinery considerable foreign exchange.

In concluding the visit, Engr. Boateng lauded TOR’s commitment to environmental sustainability and expressed optimism that the refinery’s restart would represent a defining achievement for Ghanaian engineering and industrial resilience.
