The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, known as Nana B, has criticised Attorney General Dominic Ayine for how he responded to corruption allegations made by Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, Nana B said he was deeply angered by Dr Ayine’s choice of words and approach in handling the matter. “When I heard this, I was so furious,” he said.

The tension began when A Plus accused the Attorney General of being “corrupt and a thief.” Nana B pointed out that these are not just remarks from a public figure, but from a sitting MP.

“A Plus is not just any person now. A Plus is an Honourable Member of Parliament who belongs to the Majority and says that you are corrupt and a thief,” he stressed.

According to Nana B, instead of taking legal action to protect his reputation, the Attorney General claimed that A Plus was attacking him because of campaign funds.

“In your response, you are saying that A Plus is saying so because you went for some campaign funds from one Dr Sledge… and people have even advised you to initiate legal proceedings against A Plus that is, a defamation suit but you will not do that because you don’t want to be distracted,” he said.

Nana B was especially concerned about the Attorney General’s use of language, where he said he is ready to “go into the mud” with A Plus.

“If A Plus thinks that he wants to play with you in the mud, that is where you want? You are from the mud? Where you are, you are not afraid of the mud, so you go into the mud?” he questioned. “Who says we want our Attorney General to be playing in the mud?”

He reminded the public that the role of the Attorney General is clearly defined in the Constitution and should not be taken lightly.

“If I’m not mistaken, this is the only ministerial portfolio that is mentioned in the constitution with its mandate clearly stated,” he said.

He also referred to A Plus’ claims on Facebook, where the MP alleged that the Attorney General collected GH₵5,000 to bribe members of Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

Nana B said, “Now A Plus again goes back to his Facebook to say that you are lying that you went for GH₵5,000. The purpose of this money was to bribe members of the Appointments Committee of Parliament.”

Nana B continued, “The AG is telling us that he will not proceed to court to redeem his image. If you are not a thief, why not redeem yourself?”

He further criticised the Attorney General’s comment, suggesting that if every MP has received money, then there are “276 thieves in Parliament.”

Nana B described that as irresponsible and reckless. “Even for you to say that ‘I have gone for money and pick-up, and so if that is the case, we have 276 thieves in Parliament’ that is even more irresponsible.”

The politician was also alarmed by the Attorney General’s suggestion that A Plus had a role in the National Service Scheme (NSS) scandal.

“Where it is even more agitating is where he says that A Plus knows what he has done with the NSS scandal, so he should come and tell me,” he said.

“AG speaking like a mere pedestrian? You have the prosecutorial powers. You can report him to the NIB, you can report him to the police so that the police will investigate.”

He warned that the matter could damage Ghana’s international image, especially as the allegations of bribery and corruption are coming from within the ruling party itself.

“Look at how this thing is going to be looked at internationally, that the Attorney General of Ghana is alleged to be a thief by a Member of Parliament and he has been specific GH₵500,000,” he stressed.
