I never said Black Queens could boycott Egypt clash over owed bonuses – Sports Minister

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has denied reports claiming he told the Black Queens to boycott their upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt.

The Queens have refused to train due to unpaid bonuses from their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco.

Joy Sports checks reveal that each player is owed $9,500 in bonuses for the tournament, which ended in July.

Reports had suggested the Sports Minister said the players could proceed with their boycott and would be replaced by others once potential CAF sanctions were dealt with.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Adams dismissed the reports, which have since gone viral on social media.

“Why would I say that, why would I spend my time driving all the way to their camp and tell them they [Black Queens] can boycott if they want to.

“So this morning, we are shocked to see [the stories]. I may not blame them [players] entirely.”

He added: “If they [Black Queens] insist [by boycotting], it will affect the nation, but the nation will be back. But as for you involved in the boycott, you will forever walk with that tag on you, I said so.”

The standoff threatens Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 WAFCON, which also serves as the qualifier for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Ghana hold a 3–0 advantage from the first leg against Egypt, with the return fixture set for Tuesday, October 28, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
