The New Patriotic Party (NPP) member of parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku has said that the party is staying vigilant in the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun because its main opponent, the National Democratic Congress, is not to be trusted in the process.
Speaking to Joy News reporter Jacqueline Yeboah at a polling station in Ablekuma North, Mr. Awuku reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to a peaceful process, but stressed the need for caution, given the tense political atmosphere.
“We have refrained from anything that will mar the process. That is why we are conducting ourselves well,” he said. “Those in office those mandated by the state to protect the people and protect the electoral process must ensure that they are also doing the right thing.”
He cautioned against accepting rumours of violence as the truth, especially as the polls approach their closing hours.
“I want to state that don’t let us believe the rumours we are hearing that the last few hours towards the end of the polls will be when the violence will be at its peak. We have gone almost half of the day, and we believe it’s been relatively peaceful.”
However, Mr. Awuku was unambiguous about his mistrust of the opposition.
” We do not trust the NDC in this process. Let’s be very honest I don’t trust them, and that is why we are vigilant. Because I have seen many of their operations boys, as we say.”
He underscored that the NPP is relying on both lawful conduct and vigilance.
“We want the police to do their work. That doesn’t mean we don’t also have the same boys as they do, but we have been very restrained, and we also go by the rules.”
Mr. Awuku affirmed the party’s support for its candidates and voters on the ground.
“Notwithstanding, the NPP will also help provide security to support our candidate and our people at the various polling stations to also help give them comfort. Let the police do their part. As citizens, we will do our part.”
