Founder of the defunct UT Bank, Captain (Rtd) Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has stated that he is indifferent about who emerges as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, emphasising that his primary concern is the future of Ghana rather than internal party politics.
The NPP is preparing to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, with Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong among the high-profile names expected to shape the contest.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on the AM Show ahead of the NPP’s upcoming presidential primaries, Mr Amoabeng said he has no intention of influencing the party’s internal processes and would respect whatever decision the delegates make.
“I don’t care. It matters how you’re hoping that this country becomes better. It’s about their delegates and things to choose, and I don’t have anything to influence anything,” he said.
According to him, his focus is not on personalities but on the policies and vision that will eventually be presented to Ghanaians, particularly as the NPP prepares to face the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the next general election.
“Whatever they choose to leave the NPP, that’s fine. And then we have to come up with their manifesto to challenge the NDC and things like that,” he added.
Mr Amoabeng, who described himself as someone who does not dwell deeply on partisan politics, explained that his neutrality is also informed by his personal relationships with some of the leading contenders.
“I know Bawumia personally; he is a nice guy. I have conversations with him. Kennedy Agyapong is my old schoolmate — Santa Clausians — and I don’t want to take sides,” he said.
He wished all aspirants well, urging them to put in their best efforts for the good of the party and the country.
“They should do their best, may the better person win, and then may they have a manifesto to challenge the NDC,” he stated.
