The Member of Parliament for Hohoe in the Volta Region, Worlanyo Tsekpo, has expressed his commitment to improving the standard of education in his constituency.
According to him, his office and stakeholders would implement a comprehensive programme to resolve the identified challenges impeding academic activities, leading to low performance of learners.
He disclosed this in an interview with Myjoyonline.com on the sidelines of a quiz competition organised by the Led Concept Global.
He identified the lack of infrastructure as a major stumbling block which needs to be addressed, where some pupils are either studying under trees or under deplorable structures.
He said funds would be injected into the construction of classrooms for deserving schools to make available a befitting environment for teaching and learning activities.
“If you go to some schools, in fact, the children still sit under trees in the Hohoe constituency. That was why I said the education system I inherited is nothing to write home about. So we are also working to put infrastructure in place in deserving schools”, he said.
He disclosed that information communication technology labs will be constructed to server each of the 20 cluster of schools in his jurisdiction to ensure the learners acquire the necessary skill set to advance in the global village and harness potentials of the fourth industrial revolution.
“We plan to provide 20 ICT centres. It is still on the table and we are discussing it with the education director, he explained.

Mr. Tsekpo further stated that the lack of teachers bungalow is another lingering issue hindering the progress of education in his area, hence funds would be solicited to provide befitting homes for teachers posted to the Hohoe Municipality.
“We have been to one of the communities in Wli and if they show you the stafff quarters, you will weep. So it is something we are working on together with the assembly to ensure teachers have befitting places to sleep while serving at their stations”, he added.
He said they would not lose sight of teachers’ motivation, which would complement all the investment made to improve academic performance.
He served notice of an impending awards scheme to identify and reward deserving teachers who served tirelessly and selflessly in the classroom.
“We are going to do everything possible to see to it that the standard of education in Hohoe [Constituency] improves. So that, it will be a benchmark for other constituencies to look up to”, he concluded.
