Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has condemned what it describes as a brazen assault on press freedom following the reported attack on JoyNews journalist Latif Iddrisu at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.

In a statement, HRRG expressed “grave disturbance and outrage” over the incident, calling it a direct attack on human rights, media freedom, and the safety of journalists in Ghana.

“This assault on a journalist carrying out his professional duties is a direct attack on press freedom, human rights, and the safety of journalists in Ghana,” the group said.

The human rights organisation has demanded swift and transparent action from Ghanaian authorities. “We strongly denounce this act of violence and join calls for the Ghanaian authorities to conduct a prompt and transparent investigation. Justice must be served, and those responsible must be held accountable without delay.”

HRRG is calling on the Inspector General of Police, the President, and other key state actors to not only investigate the incident thoroughly but also to take steps to ensure such violence does not recur.

“The safety of journalists is essential for a thriving democracy and the protection of freedom of expression under Article 162 of Ghana’s Constitution,” the statement read.

The organisation emphasised that no journalist should face threats or harm while performing their duties and urged political actors to fully cooperate with any probe into the incident.

HRRG also extended sympathy and solidarity to Latif Iddrisu and his family, as well as the broader media community.

“We appeal to civil society, media organisations, and the public to unite against the alarming trend of violence and intimidation targeting journalists,” HRRG stated.

“A free and safe press is the cornerstone of democracy, and any attempt to obstruct or harm journalists undermines Ghana’s progress.”

HRRG says it will closely monitor developments in the case and work with stakeholders to ensure justice is served.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for accountability and safeguarding the rights and safety of journalists in Ghana.
