How Daddy Lumba got his stage name

Music producer Fred Kyei Mensah, also known as Fredyma, has shed light on the fascinating story behind how Ghana’s Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, got his iconic name.

In a recent interview, Fredyma shared the intriguing tale of how Charles Kodwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, adopted his stage name.

According to Fredyma, the inspiration behind Daddy Lumba’s name came from Patrice Lumumba, a renowned African leader from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

While in school at Juaben Secondary School, Daddy Lumba was part of a choir that sang a song about Lumumba, which left a lasting impression on him.

The song’s themes of strength, leadership, and purpose resonated deeply with Daddy Lumba, reflecting the qualities that would come to define his own musical journey.

“The song about Patrice Lumumba stayed with him. It symbolised strength, leadership, and purpose—qualities that mirrored his own journey.”

These qualities ultimately influenced Charles Kodwo Fosu’s decision to adopt “Lumba” as his stage name, a nod to the African leader who had inspired him.

Over time, the name “Lumba” became synonymous with excellence in Ghana’s Highlife music scene. As Daddy Lumba’s career progressed, he added “Daddy” to his name, signifying maturity, fatherhood, and a deeper connection with his audience.

This addition cemented his status as a beloved figure in Ghanaian music, and “Daddy Lumba” became a household name.

The Ghanaian music community is plunged into mourning following the death of highlife legend Daddy Lumba on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

The 60-year-old musician passed away at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a brief illness. Daddy Lumba’s contributions to Ghana’s music industry have been profound, spanning decades and leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s cultural landscape

Undoubtedly, his name has become an integral part of Ghana’s Highlife music history, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians and fans alike.
