Helicopter crash: Journalist granted GH¢100,000 bail over alleged false publication

An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, a broadcast journalist, over the publication of alleged false news concerning the August 6, helicopter crash.

Asare, who works with Wontumi Multimedia, appeared before the court on Wednesday dressed in all-black attire and appeared composed.

He was admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.

The court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, ordered that the sureties must be civil servants, one of whom should earn not less than GH¢5,000.

Additionally, Asare is to report once a week to the Special Investigations Unit of the Ghana Police Service.

The case has been adjourned to September 1, 2025.

The prosecution had initially opposed the bail application, indicating that they were still filing their disclosures.

On Monday, August 25, the court, presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, said he was going to rule on the bail application on Wednesday because of the prosecution’s opposition based on filing their disclosures.

Chief Inspector Daniel Danku held a brief for Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Haligah, the substantive prosecutor.

Asare, who hosts the programme “Nsempafie” on Wontumi Radio, is alleged to have said on a live broadcast on August 9, 2025, that “If your family member is part of those who died, you must hold President Mahama responsible because he is aware of every.”

According to the prosecution, Asare claimed during the programme that President Mahama caused the helicopter crash at Akrofoum in the Ashanti Region.

“This statement, which was false, has generated an uproar within a section of the populace,” the prosecution told the court.

Asare was arrested on August 12, 2025, based on police intelligence.

During investigations, he admitted the offence in his caution statement.

He has since pleaded not guilty to the charge of publication of false news with intent to cause fear and panic.
