A windstorm on Thursday night in Tamale has left over 1,000 female students of the Northern School of Business Senior High School without a dormitory.

As a contingency measure, the school’s management has relocated and moved the boys to join other boys’ hostels to help create a temporary place for the girls.

This has exacerbated the already congested situation in the school.

According to the Headmaster, Hassan Issah Dokurugu, the school is already struggling with limited space.
“The congestion situation in the rooms in fact can be likened to what is seen in the ant hill. They are literally lying on each other. Every small space in the room and on the veranda is used,” he said.

He said that with the area recording high temperature, it would affect the school gravely.

The Headmaster appealed for urgent support to help address the challenge.

One of the students, Mohammed Adisa Mantinso, told JoyNews, the windstorm started around 4:30 pm, adding that even though it didn’t rain much, the wind was too strong, destroying the roof of the building.

“The rain started yesterday [Thursday] in the evening around 4:30, even though it didn’t rain much, the wind was so strong that it removed the roof and it fell inside the room, blocking them from running out. It was after the rain that the boys came and removed the roof, and we came out. They have moved the boys, and we are now occupying one of the boys’ dormitory, ” she said.

Another student raised concerns about the congestion in classrooms and the various dormitories.

She said a dormitory that should have housed about 10 students has about 25 students, urging the government to step in.
