Health Minister announces completion of 13,500 nurses and midwives recruitment

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the government has completed the recruitment of 13,500 nurses and midwives, marking a significant milestone in efforts to stabilise the country’s health workforce.

He further revealed that all newly engaged personnel who experienced delays in salary payments will receive their outstanding remuneration by the end of the month.

Delivering a speech at the GRNMA 19th Biennial Conference in Tamale, the minister explained that the recruitment forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen frontline healthcare delivery, particularly under the Free Primary Healthcare and Mahama Cares programmes. He emphasised that nurses and midwives remain central to the success of these reforms.

He nalso noted that the government is considering the negotiated Conditions of Service for inclusion in the 2026 Budget, describing it as a clear commitment to improving the welfare of health workers.

He added that promotions for nurses and midwives have now been regularised, resolving the delays previously caused by limited vacancies.
