The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Haruna Iddrisu, has funded a fourth life-saving surgery for a six-year-old boy, Abdula Hannan, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), following a prolonged medical condition caused by the accidental ingestion of a corrosive substance.

The procedure, scheduled for March 25, 2026, is estimated to cost $25,000 (approximately GH¢300,000). It marks the latest in a series of surgeries the child has undergone over the past four years.

According to the family, Abdula Hannan accidentally drank a soda-based chemical substance while playing at home at the age of two, resulting in severe internal injuries. Since then, he has undergone three separate surgeries as doctors worked to stabilise his condition and prepare him for a final corrective procedure.

Medical staff at KATH have been monitoring the boy’s condition and have delayed the final surgery until he reaches an age suitable for the complex intervention.

Haruna Iddrisu, who also serves as Ghana’s Minister of Education, stepped in to support the family shortly after learning about the child’s condition. He has since covered the costs of all four surgeries and pledged continued support for the boy’s recovery.

Speaking to the media at the hospital, a representative of the minister, Rafia Hajiah Rashida, said the MP encountered the struggling family by chance and immediately offered assistance.

“Since that day, the little boy has undergone three successful surgeries under the sponsorship of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu. The fourth surgery, which is taking place today, costs about $25,000,” she said.

She added that the minister remains committed to supporting post-surgery care to help the child regain the ability to eat normally through his mouth.

Currently, Abdula Hannan is being fed through a surgically created opening in his stomach — a condition he has lived with for four years.

Rashida also used the opportunity to caution parents against exposing children to hazardous substances.

“This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers of leaving harmful chemicals within reach of children,” she said.

The boy’s parents, Abdula Ibrahim Antwi and Seidu Kashifa, expressed deep gratitude to the MP for his continued support.

“Without Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, we would not have been able to afford our son’s medical care,” the father said. “We are small-scale farmers, and our annual income is far below the cost of these treatments.”

He explained that the child was initially treated at health facilities in Tamale before being referred to other hospitals, including Tachiman Holy Family Hospital, and eventually to KATH for specialised care.

The boy’s mother, visibly emotional, described the MP as a “saviour” and appealed to Ghanaians to show appreciation for his intervention.

“I don’t know how to thank him. Wherever you see Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, please thank him on our behalf,” she said.

The upcoming surgery is expected to be a critical step towards restoring the child’s ability to eat independently and improving his overall quality of life.
