Haruna Iddrisu cautions students, teachers at AI centre commissioning

Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged students to embrace purposeful learning and integrity as Ghana transitions towards a technology-driven future, while warning teachers that unethical conduct in schools will not be tolerated.

The Dr Leonard Kaledzi Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence Education was officially commissioned on October 6, 2025, at Bleamezado in the Anloga Municipality.

The centre, themed “Empowering Futures with Artificial Intelligence,” is expected to serve as a major hub for innovation, digital skills development, and artificial intelligence research.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mr Iddrisu encouraged students to commit themselves to hard work and discipline as they prepare to lead Ghana’s future.

“The future of our country is yours. Work hard, learn hard, learn purposefully, respect parents, respect teachers, and the world tomorrow is yours. Learn with integrity,” he urged.

Addressing ethical concerns in the education sector, the Education Minister issued a stern warning to teachers and students who engage in inappropriate behaviour, stressing that the state fully supports disciplinary action.

“To the Director-General of GES and the Regional Director, be assured that you have the full power and support of the state to sanction any person—teacher or learner—who does not uphold minimum standards of professionalism and ethical behaviour,” he stated.

He described as “unacceptable” the increasing reports of teachers attempting to exploit learners and condemned romantic relationships among teachers within the same school environment as unprofessional and unethical.

“Even if the teachers are unmarried, relationships within the same school environment are unethical, unacceptable, unprofessional, and compromise our standards in the delivery of quality, sustainable education,” he emphasised.

Mr Iddrisu also pledged to advocate for improved infrastructure in the Anloga area, particularly road development.

“I pass these bad roads to Parliament. I’m a strong advocate, and I will support him when the Shime area roads come up for discussion. I will speak with the same strength to ensure that the Government and the Honourable Minister for Roads give this area particular attention,” he said.

“I now have the singular honour and privilege to officially commission the Artificial Intelligence Lab Centre, posthumously in honour of Dr Yao Kaledzi,” Mr Iddrisu declared.
