The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving water meters, stopcocks, and safety valves- crucial components for monitoring water consumption and ensuring accurate billing.
This appeal follows the arrest of an 18-year-old man by a joint team of police and GWCL officials. He is suspected of masterminding the theft of water meters in several parts of Accra.
Authorities revealed that the arrest was made after a series of complaints from residents concerning missing meters, which have severely disrupted the water supply in Adenta for several weeks.
The police have indicated that the stolen meters are believed to be sold as scrap or illegally reused, compromising the efficiency of water services.
For months, officials have received reports of stolen meters, stopcocks, and safety valves, prompting intensified efforts to tackle the rising tide of theft across the region.
Communications Manager, Nana Yaw Banie, has called on the community to support their cooperation, urging the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving water infrastructure.
“The only thing that we are asking community members to do, which they have always been doing, is to help us nip this kind of activity in the bud, ”he said.
This latest arrest forms part of a broader initiative by the GWCL to stem the growing trend of water meter theft.
