Dozens of buildings close to the Densu River which feeds the Weija Dam have been earmarked for demolition by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

The notice on structures in the Weija-Gbawe municipality in the Greater Accra region states the structures will be demolished.

The Weija Dam provides potable drinking water to thousands of homes in the capital and sources within the Ghana Water Company Limited say the demolition is to protect it from encroachment.

However, residents say the thought of losing their property in this time of harsh economic conditions has brought great distress to them.

They called on the government to intervene in the situation.

“My husband has been crying since our building was marked for demolition. He invested all his savings in the construction of the property and the thought of losing it is giving him sleepless nights,” a resident, Naana Ofori lamented.

Another resident, Mavis Boateng who lives in a one-storey building says her structure is not close to the Densu River and so she is surprised her building has been marked too.

“I don’t know where I would take my family to. I have invested a lot in the project and so we haven’t slept ever since they pasted the notice on the property,” she added.

Semey Philip Edem, another resident said the harsh economic conditions in the country have already taken a toll on residents, therefore he cannot imagine how residents are going to cope with the demolition exercise.

“We are very much worried and at the same time frightened. This is my brother’s house and some of us acquired loans to build the house, there are others who used their pension pay to build their houses so we are having sleepless nights.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Water Company Limited has refused to comment on the issue.

However, JoyNews’ sources within the company say management will release a statement on the issue soon, adding that the company is concerned about the encroachment of its lands and human activities close to the Densu River.
