A one-day examination symposium for the final year students of the Ave Senior High School (AVESCO) at Ave Dakpa in the Akatsi North District of the Volta Region has ended at Ave Dakpa with a call on the candidates to remain focused and avoid any examination malpractices in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The symposium, the sixth in the series, was organized by the Generation Thinkers of Ave Dakpa (GTAD), an educational Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) based at Ave Dakpa, in collaboration with the Akatsi North District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the management of AVESCO.
The examination forum was under the theme, ‘Let Studying for Excellent Results Remain Your Goal’.
According to the Executive Director of GTAD, Mr. Tony Quist, the symposium was aimed, among other things, at physically, mentally, and emotionally preparing the more than five hundred (500) final year students at AVESCO towards successfully taking part in this year’s WASSCE.
The forum afforded final-year students the opportunity to be taken through several topics, thereby shaping their minds for the examination.
A Chief Examiner of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), Mr. Newman Johnson Kpogo took the candidates through the topic, ‘Academic Preparation’ whiles the former Head of Department (HOD) of Chemistry at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Professor Johannes A.M. Awudza discussed ‘Mental and Emotional Wellness’ with the students. Mr. Peter Atsu Danyo, an alumnus of AVESCO and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rockstar Academy at Dzodze, addressed the topic, ‘Examination Ethics and Integrity’.
The students used the opportunity to ask several questions whose answers they described as satisfying and welcoming, as they prepared to sit for their final examination.
Speaking to the media in an interview after the forum, Professor Awudza noted that for the final year students to be able to pass their examination very well, they need to have good mental and emotional wellness.
This, according to him, requires the students to develop very positive attitudes towards life, in addition to not only having the right emotions relating to people very well but also being very positive in all their actions and inactions. ‘We should also realize that we are capable of making it no matter the situation. We should have the ‘I can do it’ attitude, and with this, we can pass our examination, ’ Professor Awudza emphasized.
He also called on the students to manage their time judiciously, saying this requires the development of their examination learning timetable, which should take care of the proper allocation of time for all subjects, with additional time made available for the difficult subjects.
The Chief Examiner of WAEC urged the candidates not only to adequately prepare for the examination but also to remove fear from their minds. Mr. Kpogo reminded the students to be disciplined, read their notes and the questions very well, avoid panicking, and above all, read the instructions associated with all the questions.
‘Every subject comes with its rudiments and instructions.
Therefore, read the questions carefully and understand them. Don’t read the questions halfway and assume that you know the answers, the Chief Examiner stressed.
Mr. Kpogo expressed concern about the proliferation of social media jargon amongst students, adding that this is a threat to their performance because this jargon is not examinable in any examination in Ghana and elsewhere. According to him, the use of social media jargon such as ‘dis’ instead of ‘this’, ‘dat’ instead of ‘that’, and ‘cos’ instead of because is deeply worrying and should be avoided at all costs by students.
Mr. Danyo, for his part, noted that as old students, it is their joy to have their younger brothers and sisters exiting school with flying colours, adding that it gives motivation to those behind them to follow in their footsteps as well. He reminded the students to value integrity, saying such a value is not only needed for their examination but also in life, including the world of work. Mr. Danyo also urged the students to avoid examination malpractices, emphasizing that it could thwart their efforts at progressing in their future academic pursuits.
The Headmaster of the school, Mr. Stephen Yao Ahli, lauded GTAD for the initiative and urged similar NGOs in the district and beyond to support the school and the students with similar initiatives. He was hopeful that the symposium would go a long way in positively impacting the students in their examinations and life after their papers.
The School Prefect, Master Alex Asinyo, and the Girls’ Prefect, Miss Blessing Ahiabu, described the forum as very educative and revealing, assuring that it would help them greatly in their WASSCE examination.

Due to a lack of funding, GTAD has not been able to involve more than thirty (30) Junior High Schools (JHSs) in this year’s symposium, as has been the case in previous years.
The Executive Director, Mr. Tony Quist, used the opportunity to renew his appeal to all stakeholders of education in the area, as well as all well-meaning Ghanaians within and outside the country, to come to their aid in impacting more students when it comes to educational issues in the district.
