A mother left shattered by the tragic Dansoman Market fire has painfully recounted the final moments she shared with her 8-year-old daughter, Priscilla, before the inferno claimed the young girl’s life.
With a trembling voice and tears streaming down her face, she described what had begun as an ordinary, joyful evening—one she never imagined would be their last together.
“I was with her in the evening, playing and watching television,” she said, her voice breaking.
“She asked to eat kenkey and fish, and I said okay. I gave her money to buy the kenkey… I even told her I would eat gari, so she should buy soup for me on her way back,” she recounted.
According to her, Priscilla returned, settled down with her food, while she urged her gently to finish up and go to bed since she had school the next morning.
“After she went to bed, I stepped out to buy food. By then, she was asleep, so I didn’t inform her,” she said.
It was while she was at the food vendor’s stand that the nightmare unfolded. According to her, a friend called to inform her about the fire.
“She called saying, ‘Yaa, there is fire in my shed,’ and I responded, ‘Yei, my daughter o… my daughter is there.’ That was all. I didn’t see my daughter again,” she wailed.
The Dansoman Market fire, which swept through several wooden structures, destroyed multiple shops and tragically trapped the young girl who had been sleeping inside one of the kiosks.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the blaze as the community mourns the loss of a child gone far too soon.
