The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural ResourcesBenito Owusu Bio

The Deputy Minister of Lands and National Resources, Benito Owusu Bio, says the government’s objectives for the Green Ghana project has been effectively achieved.

According to him, a separate report by National Security and his outfit revealed that over 70 % of trees planted during the project in 2021 and 2022 survived.

“In 2021, we started with an initial target of five million and at the close of the day, we were able to distribute and plant seven million. Then the following year, we set another target of 20 million and we did around 24 million. As we speak, on average if you take the two years together the survival rate of these seedlings is pegged around 70%,” he said during a visit to thank partners of the project.

The Minister accompanied by a team visited three partners and presented plaques to show appreciation for their support to the Green Ghana project.

The first stop was at the Ghana Oil Company (GOIL) where the Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kwame Osei Prempeh, was full of praise for the initiative.

“This dream is a good one, and every Ghanaian ought to support it especially corporate bodies. We know that the use of fossil fuels damages the environment, so the more trees we have, the better it is for us because some of the carbon can be absorbed and we can have some free air,” he said on Wednesday.

At Japan Motors, the Managing Director, Abdul Somod Alhassan Musa said his outfit supported the initiative because they believe it will help in reducing the impact of global warming.

Mr Musa seized the opportunity to request that his outfit be brought up to speed on the number of trees planted and the number which survived.

The final stop was at the Chamber of Mines, where its CEO, Sulemanu Koney assured the minister of his outfit’s continuous support for the initiative.

“We have discussed Green Ghana at the highest level of the Chamber of Mines and a  decision was taken that we should continue to budget for Green Ghana going forward,” he said

This year’s Green Ghana is scheduled for June 7 with a goal of distributing a total of ten million trees.

The Green Ghana Day was introduced in 2021 by President Akufo-Addo to restore Ghana’s lost greenery.
