The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has tasked Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to fix and maintain street lights within their respective jurisdictions in the region.

She has given the assemblies a period of 50 days, beginning March 3, 2025, to ensure they repair all faulty streetlights to brighten up the national capital at night.

In line with that, the minister said her outfit had written to the Ministries of Energy and Roads and Highways which she said had all responded positively to work within the time.

She explained that the provision and maintenance of streetlights were crucial for security and urban development.

“I promised the people of the region that within 50 days in office, major highways in the region would be lighted up,” Ms Ocloo said.

The minister gave the directive when she paid a working visit to the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly on Wednesday, February 19, to familiarise herself with the activities of the assembly.

Ms Ocloo commended some assemblies which had already put in place structured maintenance plans for streetlights to enhance safety and visibility in their respective communities.

“We will meet our target even though we have had a lot of challenges such as the stealing of cables, we are working to make sure we meet our targets within the 50 days,” she said.

The minister indicated that she would be visiting all 29 MMDAs in the region to make sure they complied with the directive.

Ms Ocloo, who is also the Shai Osuduku Member of Parliament, said her key areas of focus included sanitation and waste management, public safety and strengthening of local governance.

She commended the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly for their efforts in improving sanitation within the municipality, and urged them to embrace the Regional Sanitation Day scheduled for February 28, 2025.

“It is imperative that we continue to strengthen waste management strategies, enhance community engagement, and enforce sanitation regulations to maintain a hygienic environment,” the minister added.

She said that a team had been set up at the Regional Coordinating Council to monitor and award the cleanest assembly.

The Municipal Coordinating Director of the Assembly, Emmanuel Baisie, expressed commitment to work with the minister to enhance service delivery and improve the quality of life of the people.
