The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has commissioned 15 brand-new SINOTRUK HOWO trucks into service at the Port of Tema as part of a strategic initiative to enhance operational efficiency and support increasing cargo volumes.

The fleet includes 12 trucks rated at 430 horsepower and three at 400 horsepower, each paired with a 60-ton flatbed trailer.

These state-of-the-art heavy-duty vehicles are part of GPHA’s broader modernisation drive aimed at improving cargo handling, reducing turnaround time, and strengthening Tema Port’s competitiveness in the West African sub-region.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the port premises, brought together senior officials from GPHA, Ecobank Ghana, and Zonda Tec Ghana Limited.

GPHA Director General, Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, underscored the importance of ongoing investment in logistics infrastructure.

“These trucks will significantly enhance our ability to move cargo efficiently within the port area, which is critical to maintaining Tema Port’s position as a leading maritime hub in West Africa,” he said.

He also stressed the need for a robust maintenance culture to ensure the longevity of the trucks, noting that this acquisition supports the Authority’s broader strategy to ease the burden on shippers and facilitate smoother trade operations.

Director of the Port of Tema, Tebon Zuma Esq., highlighted the trucks’ advanced safety features and compliance with international emissions standards, reflecting GPHA’s commitment to sustainability.

“This is the first batch of a total of 30 trucks procured for the second quarter of the year. We will receive another 15 trucks next month.

“These vehicles are more than just tools—they symbolise our commitment to operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and strategic growth,” he stated.

Mr. Zuma also announced that GPHA expects to receive up to 100 trucks and over a dozen reach stackers within the year to further expand its logistics capabilities.

“These vehicles will support container handling, cargo transfer, and internal haulage—key operations that drive productivity at the Port of Tema,” he said.

He added that the Authority remains committed to continuous staff training and high professional standards in fleet management.

He commended the procurement and engineering teams, along with Ecobank Ghana, for their roles in delivering the project.

Industry stakeholders have praised the initiative, noting that enhanced logistics within the port will ease supply chain bottlenecks and improve overall trade flow.

The trucks are expected to begin full operations immediately, handling container movements and providing vital logistics support within the port enclave.

This latest development marks another milestone in GPHA’s mission to transform Ghana’s port infrastructure and deliver world-class services to its clients.
