The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustained engagement with key stakeholders in the power sector as part of efforts to address persistent challenges in electricity distribution.
In a social media post on Wednesday, January 21, the Minister said he had engaged the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Public Utilities Workers’ Union (PUWU), the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and representatives of various utility institutions on private sector participation in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and NEDCo.
Describing the meeting as open and evidence-based, Dr Jinapor said, “The engagement was frank, constructive, and driven by data.”
He noted that the government views such consultations as critical to building consensus around reforms aimed at strengthening the sector and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
The Minister admitted that the power sector continues to face serious challenges within the distribution chain, particularly in billing and revenue collection.
“What is not in doubt is that there is a major challenge within the distribution chain of the power sector, particularly in the areas of billing and collections,” he stated, warning that failure to act decisively could undermine the entire sector.
Dr Jinapor assured stakeholders of the government’s resolve to confront these challenges directly.
“As a Government, we are fully committed to addressing these challenges comprehensively,” he said, adding that reforms would be guided by data, transparency, and broad consultation with affected institutions and labour unions.
He stressed that the overarching objective of the reforms is to safeguard the power sector and guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply.
“Our focus is to protect the power sector and ensure reliable, continuous electricity supply to homes, businesses, and all citizens,” the Minister added, reiterating the government’s commitment to sustainable energy sector reforms.
