Gov’t to begin construction of new children’s hospital in Kumasi in January 2026 — KMA Boss

Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has announced that the government will break ground for a new children’s hospital in Kumasi in January 2026.

Speaking to Adom News at the commissioning of the Abiss Bus Terminal and Lodge in Adehyeman, the MCE said preparatory work for the project has been completed, with the government now in the final stages of securing land for construction.

According to him, Kumasi currently operates only two pediatric facilities—the Kumasi Children’s Hospital at Adum-Pampaso and the private Asokwa Children’s Hospital—leaving a widening gap in child healthcare for a growing population.

“Kumasi currently has only two hospitals equipped to handle children’s health needs… To address this challenge, the President has directed the construction of a new hospital, slated to begin in January 2026, specifically designed to cater to the health needs of children in Kumasi,” he said.

Mr. Boadi described the new hospital as part of a broader development agenda aimed at improving essential services in the Ashanti Regional capital.

He also highlighted congestion as a major hurdle facing the metropolis, blaming the situation on the shortage of proper markets and lorry terminals. He urged private investors to support government efforts to expand the city’s infrastructure.

“In Kumasi, congestion is one of our biggest challenges. The city is overcrowded due to the inadequacy of lorry terminals and markets. Our government is committed to restoring Kumasi’s reputation as the ‘Garden City’,” he noted.

CEO of the newly commissioned Abiss Terminal and Lodge, Abigail Aduako, echoed the call for strong public-private partnerships, stressing that job creation cannot be left to government alone.

She appealed for enhanced security support from the state to help businesses thrive, particularly under the planned 24-hour economy policy.

“The government alone cannot reduce unemployment. We need stronger support for individuals creating jobs for the youth,” she said, urging authorities to provide the needed protection for private sector investments.
