The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama has allocated $30 million in grant funding from the Chinese government to begin construction of a new University of Science and Technology in Damango.
The disclosure was made during the inauguration of the Governing Councils of four Colleges of Education—Agogo Presbyterian Women’s College of Education, Gbewa College of Education, Al-Faruq College of Education, and Enchi College of Education.
Speaking at the event, Mr Iddrisu confirmed that the grant will be used to kickstart the construction of the new university.
“President Mahama has dedicated $30 million of grant money he received from the Chinese government for us to begin work on a new University of Science and Technology in Damango, and work has begun,” he said.

He explained that recommendations have been forwarded to the Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Finance to commence a feasibility study, which will include consultations with relevant stakeholders to identify a suitable site for the university.
Beyond the new university project, the Education Minister reaffirmed his commitment to improving Damango Girls’ Secondary School, with plans to elevate it to Category A status.
“Additionally, I’m giving some attention to Damango Girls’ Secondary School. I intend to elevate it to a Category A school, but I’ll work the process so that I don’t compromise quality by declaring it a Category A school,” he stated.
He added that the school would receive targeted support to enhance its development.
“It will also receive some measurable support. And by the end of 2026, we should see some work at Damango Secondary School,” he said.
The initiative underscores the government’s broader commitment to expanding access to higher education and strengthening educational infrastructure, particularly in underserved regions of the country.
