Gov’t committed to passing and sponsoring Anti-LGBTQ Bill – Tanko Computer

Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, says the government is fully committed to ensuring the passage of the Anti-LBGTQI+ Bill, saying that the administration is even prepared to sponsor the legislation itself.

Speaking on Prime Insight on Joy Prime on Saturday, October 25, Mr Tanko said the government’s position on the matter reflects Ghana’s cultural and traditional values, which strongly oppose same-sex relationships.

“We are so committed to passing that bill to the extent that government wants to sponsor it itself,” he stated.

“Government is saying that we are mindful of Ghanaian culture. We are very mindful of our culture and tradition. And thank God, the Speaker of Parliament is all out for it.”

He dismissed claims that the process was being delayed, explaining that the government has been in power for less than a year and is still putting the necessary structures in place to ensure the bill is properly handled.

“It’s not taking long. We are putting the structures together. That bill is being prepared, and I am saying the government is going to sponsor it, and it will come to pass,” he said.

Mr Tanko also pointed out that the NDC has enough numbers in Parliament to pass the bill once it is tabled.

“When you talk of doing it, it makes it easier because we have the numbers. These numbers that we have, we are going to use them for the benefit of the good people of Ghana,” he said.

He emphasised that the bill aligns with Ghana’s religious and cultural beliefs, which overwhelmingly reject LGBTQI practices.

“Our tradition upholds it, and ur culture upholds this completely. The Islamic clerics are against it, the churches are against it, even our traditional believers are all also against this,” he said.

“We know there’s already a law, the Criminal Code, which makes room for certain aspects to be criminalized,” he added.
