The government is nearing completion of the financing plan for the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza has disclosed.
The project, intended to transform road travel between Ghana’s two largest cities, is currently advancing through its technical planning phase, while the financial framework is being finalised.
Speaking to Channel One TV on Monday, November 24, 2025, Mr Agbodza said the 198.7-kilometre expressway is being designed within strict cost parameters to ensure long-term sustainability.
“When you want to do a project, if you can’t dream about something, you can’t even look at how it is,” he said.
“We have already talked about the length, which is less than 200 kilometres… The Finance Minister is working out the details of the financing model, but I can tell you it is doable.”
The new expressway will reduce the current route by over 50 kilometres, cutting travel time by half and lowering transport costs by nearly 40 per cent.
The project is expected to create more than 30,000 jobs during construction and stimulate significant economic activity along its corridor. Planned developments include industrial parks, logistics hubs and service nodes aligned with the government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda—strengthening Ghana’s regional trade and investment competitiveness.
Key design elements include eight major interchanges at Accra Hub, Adeiso, Asamankese, Akyem Oda, Ofoase, Lake Bosomtwe and Kumasi, along with three major bridges over the Birim and Pra Rivers to enhance traffic efficiency.
The route will also feature four full-service areas at Asamankese, Ayirebi, Ofoase and Lake Bosomtwe, offering fuel stations, rest stops, restaurants, vehicle repair services and emergency medical facilities.
Additionally, two state-of-the-art 20-lane automated toll plazas in Accra and Kumasi will deploy advanced digital systems to speed up tolling and minimise delays—positioning the expressway as one of Ghana’s most modern transport infrastructure projects.
