Deputy National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Isaac Jay Hyde, says the government has no right to dictate what Ghanaians say, warning that attempts to silence dissent through arbitrary arrests will not be accepted.
The protest, known as ‘Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna,’ was organised by the NPP’s National Youth wing under Salam Mustapha, the party’s National Youth Organiser.
Speaking to JoyNews, he noted that while the government and security officials are free to do their work, arbitrary arrests are unacceptable.
He emphasised that the right to free speech is guaranteed under the constitution and criticised the government for censoring citizens.
He called for responsible communication but warned that the government cannot dictate what Ghanaians say. He also condemned nighttime raids by security services, noting that anyone, from politicians to ordinary citizens, could be affected.
On the nature of the demonstration, he clarified that it was not partisan but a platform for Ghanaians to reject arbitrary arrests and defend democratic freedoms.
