Government rolls out digital net-metering portal to boost solar uptake

The government has unveiled a new digital portal aimed at simplifying the national net-metering process and encouraging more Ghanaians to adopt solar power.

Net metering enables individuals and organisations that generate electricity through solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to export surplus energy to the national grid and receive credits that offset their electricity bills.

Launching the platform in Accra on Thursday, the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, said the tool would remove long-standing administrative hurdles and support the country’s transition to cleaner energy sources.

“This intuitive system gives households, businesses and industrial users the ability to apply for smart meters for both captive and renewable installations. It also provides an integrated mechanism for tracking all solar PV systems across the country,” he explained.

Mr Gyan-Mensah said the initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources. It is being implemented with backing from the African Development Bank, the Climate Investment Funds, the Swiss government and the government of Ghana.

Swiss Ambassador Simone Giger emphasised that the platform will improve documentation processes, strengthen monitoring and enhance the accuracy of data across the renewable-energy sector, promoting greater transparency.

Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Eunice Biritwum, noted that the system would help eliminate bureaucratic delays while improving coordination between the Commission and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

Eyerusalem Fasika, Country Manager of the African Development Bank Group, acknowledged the Bank’s US$27 million contribution to Ghana’s renewable-energy initiatives, adding that the support includes ongoing work on mini-grid PV installations and the national net-metering programme.

The government expects the new portal to speed up solar adoption nationwide, offering consumers a more efficient route to clean, affordable and sustainable energy.
