Government remains unshakable in retooling security agencies – Interior Minister

Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister of the Interior, says the government remains resolute in its quest to retool and reposition the nation’s security agencies, to safeguard the country’s peace and stability.

He said peace remained Ghana’s most priceless asset and the foundation upon which development, business growth and citizens’ aspirations thrived.

Mr Mubarak said this in Wa at the commissioning of the new Upper West Regional Police Headquarters located at Sombo, a suburb of Wa.

The construction of the facility started in 2014 during President Mahama’s first term in office.

The new facility had 22 fully furnished offices, a conference room, security cameras and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities.

The Minister acknowledged the fact that successive governments had, over the years, made deliberate efforts to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Ghana Police Service, including the provision of logistics and infrastructure.

“We are fully aware that a well-equipped police officer must also be a well-accommodated one, that is why we are rolling out a comprehensive programme to improve the residential condition of officers across the country,” he explained.

Mr Mubarak described the facility as not merely a physical structure, but a symbol of continuity, discipline, leadership, sacrifice and hope, which marked a new chapter in security delivery in the region.

He called on the public to see the Police as partners in development and security, and to support them through cooperation, information sharing and mutual respect.

COP Dr Gariba Shaibu, the Director of Operations, Ghana Police Service, who represented the Inspector-General of Police, Dr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, at the commissioning, said effective policing in the region depended largely on strong collaboration between the Police Service and the people.

He said the new facility had provided a platform to deepen partnerships with key institutions in the region, including traditional and religious authorities and youth groups to enhance peace, law and order.

COP Dr Shaibu, also the Director General, Technical, at the Police Headquarters, observed that the facility symbolised the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to serve with dedication, humility and professionalism.

Mr Charles Lwanga Puozuing, the Upper West Regional Minister, said the facility commissioning was a major milestone in the region’s security architecture and a renewed assurance of the government’s commitment to the safety of all regions.

He said the region, though largely peaceful, faced emerging security threats, including cross-border crimes and armed robberies, among others, which required enhanced policing capacity.

Mr Puozuing, therefore, appealed to the Ministry of the Interior to deploy more police personnel to complement the new facility and meet the growing security needs of the region.

DCOP Francis Yiribaare, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, acknowledged former Regional Police Commanders and pioneer officers who laid the foundations of policing in the region.

The noted that history was shaped by people and policing in the region had been built on the shoulders of dedicated officers, who served with distinction.
