Government moves to address furniture shortage at Labone SHS

The Ministry of Education has moved swiftly to address a critical furniture shortage at Labone Senior High School (SHS) in Accra, following media reports that newly enrolled Form One students were resorting to sitting on the floor or using dining hall benches during lessons.

The reports, published by The Mirror and the Daily Graphic, highlighted the predicament of the students, prompting an immediate response from the ministry.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the Minister for Education, Hashmin Mohammed, the Ministry assured the public, parents, and stakeholders that the situation has received “urgent and immediate attention.”

According to the Ministry, Labone SHS had formally requested 3,282 mono desks through the Ghana Education Service (GES). The ministry confirmed that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has since approved and allocated the required furniture.

Crucially, the Ministry stated that the delivery of all allocated desks to the school is scheduled to be fully completed by the close of Monday, November 24.

The ministry positioned this intervention as part of its ongoing, wider nationwide initiative aimed at tackling furniture deficits in secondary schools.

“This timely intervention aligns with the Ministry’s ongoing nationwide programme to procure 200,000 mono desks for 100 double-track senior high schools that require priority support as they transition into the single-track system,” the statement read.

The government, through the Ministry of Education, reiterated its “unwavering dedication to ensuring that every Ghanaian student learns in a safe, supportive, and conducive environment.”

The Ministry affirmed its commitment to systematically and sustainably closing furniture gaps across all second-cycle institutions, pledging continued close collaboration with the GES, GETFund, and other key agencies to deliver the necessary infrastructure for effective teaching and learning throughout the country.
