Governance analyst says NDC’s 5% lithium stake exposes double standards in resource governance

Senyo Amekplenu, a governance analyst and a member of the NPP communications team, says the ongoing debate over Ghana’s lithium deal has exposed what he describes as the opposition NDC’s “double standards” on mineral negotiations.

Speaking on the AM Show, Amekplenu argued that the NDC’s decision to support a 5% stake in the current arrangement contradicts its earlier criticism of the governing NPP, which they accused of settling for less favourable terms.

According to him, the development “shatters the NDC’s claims of better leadership” and raises questions about the party’s consistency on natural resource governance.

“The lithium deal has exposed the hypocrisy of the NDC as they settle for 5%, far below the 10% they once criticised the NPP for,” he said. “It has revealed their double standards and incompetence.”

Senyo Amekplenu added that Ghanaians deserve clarity and honesty from all political actors, especially as the country positions itself to benefit from the global demand for critical minerals.

The lithium agreement, withdrawn on December 10, 2025, for further review, has reignited debates over whether Ghana is negotiating fair value for its resources.

The majority insists its intention for withdrawal is aimed at securing better deals for the country, but analysts say the recurring disputes often blur the line between political messaging and policy reality.

Amekplenu urged Parliament and the Minerals Commission to prioritise transparency and ensure that any revised agreement delivers long-term benefits to citizens rather than becoming another partisan battleground.
